What a Texas assisted living license means

Assisted living facilities in Texas are licensed by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). A Type A facility serves residents who do not need routine attendance during sleeping hours and can follow directions in an emergency; a Type B facility is for residents who need staff help to leave the building, may not follow directions in an emergency, or need nighttime attendance. Under HHSC rules an Alzheimer's facility is a Type B facility certified to provide specialized services to residents with Alzheimer's disease or a related condition. A license shows the facility is registered and inspected by the state; it does not rate care quality or price. Ask for the current rate sheet and the admission agreement.

Read the state record before you visit. Search the license number above in the HHSC provider search (TULIP), ask the facility for its latest inspection report and rate sheet, and, for memory care, ask to see the Alzheimer's certificate.
